ever-more apparent in the Arctic, ESA satellites continue
monitoring ice cover in this fragile environment.
ESA's Earth Observation satellites have been constantly
monitoring the ice caps since the early 1990s and the
data from both optical and radar spaceborne instruments
have revealed a detailed picture of changing sea-ice
cover. Passed on to scientific institutes all over the
world, these data have been crucial for studying the
polar environment and our present understanding of
climate change.
Due for launch in 2009, ESA's ice mission

European Ariane-5 launcher lifted off from the Guiana
Space Centre, Europe's spaceport at Kourou, French
Guiana. The cylinder-shaped MSG 1 satellite will provide
improved global weather data for Europe as a follow-on to
the Meteosat spacecraft series, which were launched by
Ariane beginning in 1977. MSG 1 is a spin-stabilized
platform built by Alcatel Space Industries for a
cooperative program of the European Space Agency and
EUMETSAT (European Organisation for the Exploitation of
Meteorological Satellites).

planet more similar to Earth than any found to date. The
new extra solar planet, or exoplanet, is only about
5-times as massive as the Earth and is the smallest
exoplanet ever found orbiting a star. Designated
OGLE-2005-BLG-390Lb, the exoplanet is around 25 000 light
years away from the Earth, close to the centre of our own
galaxy the Milky Way. It has an orbital period of 10
years and is about three times as far from its parent

change. Data from satellites help produce maps, highlight
land use change over time and create three-dimensional
digital elevation models of terrain, which allow
researchers to monitor extensive areas and remote regions
that are often inaccessible. ESAs Envisat satellite has
supplied these types of maps over Equatorial Africa for
UNESCO projects aimed at protecting biodiversity.
