Mid-80s, early spring, skunk cabbages are out; we
started at East Millstone, went along the D and R canal,
got out and looked around the flood plain. "Tropical New
Jersey" as Joe Patt used to say. He had a research plot
for Peltandra virginica here. We got in trouble with the
canoe rental folks for tracking so much mud into the
canoe. That's "Garden State Romp", by the spectacularly
rough voiced folk singer Dave van Ronk, and these are all
the towns, in alphabetical order, in the whole song,
which lasts 2:36, gets cut short here. He seems to
mispronounce Piscataway, though. Skunk cabbage

Labradors fishery was the humble wooden punt. But today,
this 300 year old wooden boatbuilding tradition is
disappearing at an alarming rate.
However, the people of Fogo and Change Islands have a
plan. They have started the Great Fogo Island Punt Race.
Cranky is the story of three teams vying to claim
bragging rights to the race's Golden Oars. The title
refers to a punt being "tippy" like a canoe. The film is
in post production - slated for boradcast on CBC spring
2009.

Officers from the Hamilton Police Service recently
took a group of at-risk native youth on an
adventure-filled canoe trip down Ontarios scenic Grand
River. Each youth was paired up with an officer and
together they navigated the river from Paris to
Brantford. Not only was it a great challenge for the kids
but it was also a unique opportunity for them to get to
know police officers outside their traditional role.
