 Three Chowan Etudes: Columns

Composer and pianist: Charles J. Hulin IV. This is
the last of three Chowan Etudes. Aspects of the etude
reflect the structure of the historic MacDowell Columns
building on the campus of Chowan University. The middle
section is a sad waltz version of the school's Alma Mater
and is a musical thought for its resident ghost, the
Brown Lady. This live performance was recorded by Chowan
University students during the 2008 Department of Music
Faculty Gala. The work is dedicated to pianist
Christopher Dillon.

Edward Alexander MacDowell (1860 - 1908) was an American
composer and pianist from the Romantic period, best known
for his second piano concerto and his piano suites
'Woodland Sketches', 'Sea Pieces', and 'New England
Idylls'. 'Woodland Sketches' includes his most popular
short piece, 'To a Wild Rose'.
In 1884, MacDowell married Marian Griswold Nevins, who
had been one of his piano students. About the time that
MacDowell composed a piano piece titled 'Cradle Song',
Marian suffered an illness that left her unable to bear
children.
