Steve Morse - live classical 1983 (added video)

I remember seeing this tour at the Town Hall in
Sydney - with Steve supporting John McLaughlin. Al
DiMeola and Paco DeLucia. I was just blown away by his
playing - in fact, for me it was the highlight of the
evening.
I don't know why Steve doesn't concentrate more on his
acoustic work. He is a sublime player (and shows how a
good leftie can play "anything"). By contrast, I once
walked out of an electric Steve Morse Trio gig - from
boredom (even if it was near the end).
I've added later video (thankfully, the first 2 songs are
the same). Hope you enjoy it!

Yes Tour Australia 2003 - Melbourne (finale)

The final minutes of Yes in Melbourne, in September
2003. This was originally a series of short cell-phone
videos - but I''ve dubbed the sound and done some cutting
and pasting - to fill in the gaps.
I can't remember who actually sent me the clips (back
when I was maintaining 'The Yes Australian Tour' site*),
but thanks - whoever you are. This also helps to make up
for the lack of original video in my "Yes in Sydney"
clip.
Unlike most of the YESFANZ Sydney committee, I didn't
travel to Melbourne (first) to see the band playing
there. Which may have been just as well, given a few
'choice

Yes Tour Australia 2003 - Sydney (added video)

The video is from the 2002 US tour - a bit jerky in
places, but OK. The audio (my own recording - the best!)
is Yes live at the Sydney Entertainment Centre, 20
September 2003. The tour was 'facilitated' by YESFANZ.
Of course it was great news at the time (5 years ago,
now) - check the YESFANZ history video for pictures. We
"partied" before the gig, met the band afterwards (at the
Four Seasons hotel - which stretched into the wee
hours...
...and met them again, twice, the next day - at Borders
Records, and at the opening of Roger Dean's exhibition at

Al DiMeola - Electric Rendezvouz

Gee, this turned out well! I matched a live video to
a studio recording - of the same song (for a change).
Easy? The durations were 9m03s and 7m48 respectively!
I had to use new versions of both the capturing and video
editing software - on a brand new (mini-notebook) PC, to
boot (which the other one doesn''t right now) - running
dual screens. PowerDirector 6 (old now) was buggy, too.
And all the so-called "capture any screen" devices I
crunched through - in the one day! I think I can now
retire peacefully from video production.
Otherwise, I was a total Al DiMeola fan from about 1979

A Beatles Celebration (the Illustrated Lyrics)

40 years ago, this is what it meant (to me) to be a
'hard core' Beatles fan: listening to side 3 of The White
Album and pouring over The Beatles Illustrated Lyrics.
'Experienced'? I wasn't even 10 years old*! Back in the
present, I've got some rare acetates (Birthday, Yer Blues
and ...Monkey) and 'digital zooms' to recreate the
effect. Enjoy!

Sebastian Hardie - Openings (live Sydney 2003)

At least I was at this concert of the premier Aussie
prog band, as they supported Yes back in 2003 (just as
they did in 1973). This is a nice recording - mixed by
keyboardist Toivo Pilt.
What can I NOT add about this?
- That I lined up for a tour program for most of the set
(as I was promised a mention in it by the Gottlieb
brothers)?
- That they actually finished the song/set here, after
being 'unplugged' by Steve Howe's roadie in Melbourne?
- That both a live DVD (from March 2003) and a new album
are lying on a shelf somewhere, awaiting "release"?

Mythology... well, according to Wikipedia:
"Between 1966 and 1967 Iommi played in a band named The
Rest. This was the first time Iommi played with old
school friend and future Black Sabbath drummer Bill Ward.
From January 1968 till July 1968, Iommi was guitarist in
Mythology, with Ward joining a month later in Mid
February. In May 1968, police raided the group's practice
flat and found cannabis resin, which resulted in a £15
fine and a two-year conditional discharge for Iommi,
Ward, Smith and Marshall. Mythology split up after a gig

Be Bop Deluxe - Soundtrack Swan Song (edit)

The first (album) lineup of Be Bop Deluxe was
dismissed by the record company as "too much like Steve
Harley & Cockney Rebel". So guitarist (pianist) & leader
Bill Nelson reformed it - first as a 3-piece, with
lyrical Kiwi (and Hendrix clone?) Charlie Tumahai on bass
and fusion-fan Simon Fox on drums. Andy 'Ashes To Ashes'
Clarke joined for the third album, 'Sunburst Finish'.
Roy-Thomas Baker produced album No.2, "Futurama", in 1975
- the same time he made "A Night At The Opera" with
Queen. I think this is the better album - a sort of "Axis
Bold As Love" (Hendrix) for the mid-1970s. Give

The Jimi Hendrix Experience (a reflection)

For my Hendrix tribute, I've avoided any "obvious"
material, and the copyright claims that follow (my Led
Zeppelin clip was almost "yanked"(?) - and THIS one was
late). So be prepared for something strange and
unfamiliar.
Hendrix was, without doubt, the greatest guitar player
ever. That most of his life was such a tragedy shouldn't
go lost on people, though. And he HAD to be left-handed -
like myself - to play like that ("x"s in the name help,
too!). Mind you, Hendrix was dead an exact year before
11-year old me got his first guitar. And I was the first
of '3 little bros' to get one.

Led Zeppelin: Dazed Confused (middle) 14 Sept 1971

My favorite Led Zeppelin live recording was also my
first - Berkeley Community Theatre, 1971 (which I got in
1974*). It's such a pity - everything I've heard since
was a disappointment (though I saw/loved Plant & Page
live in the 90s).
It's taken a long, long lonely time to find a complete
digital copy of the '71 concert, but... well, THE BAND IS
ON FIRE! Listening to this performance of 'Dazed and
Confused' for first time left me just that. This is dark,
primeval music - that just defied capturing on the albums
of the time.

recording), but it's great - and recorded all in the one
place! My video edit* and audio fixes.
Jon's voice is missing from all but the very end. And,
given the peculiar nature of the Montreux footage, this
seems intentional. And, finally, that cut at the end was
already there.

False starts and un-faded endings, from the greatest
(selling) jazz album of all time (plus added video). It's
easy to see why - I haven't met anyone yet who doesn't
like it (especially women). It was a sort of Led Zeppelin
IV for its age, I suppose (only 12 years separates them -
and it's my next video subject).
I'm a huge Miles fan (check the video response) - I even
wanted to join his band, after seeing them

Focus - Live 1976 (w Philip Catherine): Virtuous Woman*

An interesting cross-over between 'Prog' and 'Fusion'
- this is part of the opening track (and the best one)
from an FM radio broadcast - of the first Focus without
wildfire Jan Akkerman.
The sound is a bit "strong" - coming from a 'lossless'
audio feed. I didn't want to start messing with it. The
video is 'Angel Wings'. *The song has at least 5 versions
(and names) - this is, by far, the best arrangement.
Like many 70s prog bands (and most bands of the fusion
era), Focus only lasted a few years at their best. This

Emerson, Lake Powell - Tarkus: studio (new video)

ELPowell at Sprocket Studios in 1986 - after the
debut album and before the supporting tour. Part of the
"official bootleg", 'The Sprocket Sessions'.
Video-wise, it's a case "third time lucky" with this.
First I tried video from Zardoz (1974), then Omikron game
captures. Now, I've got all original ELPowell footage -
and something I can recommend without reservation.
Then there's the great Tarkus 'joke', as Greg mentions on
the DVD-set. To paraphrase: Keith plays the song to him
right through for the first time. "Whaddya think?" "Well,
that'll sound great on your solo album!"

John McLaughlin: 1972 - Three Acoustic Songs

'Pre-Indian' Mahavishnu on solo acoustic guitar,
doing (or working on) 3 pieces. Recorded during the "Love
Devotion Surrender" sessions.
As this was played before his Eastern musical tutorship
(under Ravi Shankar initially), the playing sounds...
quite 'normal'. But it does creep up on you, with
repeated listening.
I (obviously) added the video/s later - considering the
lack of footage, it's quite a good job. My next project
is around Philip Catherine-era Focus (I've given up on my
1967 BBC broadcast of the Danny Thompson Trio for now).

Verifiably the Mahavishnu Orchestra's earliest live
recording - my favorite one, as well. Why?
It comes from a radio broadcast by WAER-FM - live from
the Jabberwocky Nightclub, Syracuse NY, on April 11 1971.
And, without even having their first album released, the
setlist spans the entire MO#1 career (which I think is
significant - in terms of its break-up):
- Miles Beyond;
- Dream;
- Vital Transformation;
- Dawn;
- Sanctuary (NOT in the video); and
- Awakening.
I've cut the whole concert down to 10 minutes, remixed
the audio and added video from a later show.

Classic AvS - Foxy: Get Off, (Hi-Q, J-Pop)

Here's that venerable and under-rated disco hit of
the late 70s - performed J-pop style. With onscreen
lyrics to shout (sing?) along to - and some Japanese CGI
dancing.
This is the first upload of the high-quality version -
there were size limits before. And it really NEEDS that
high-quality setting, too (if you like it)!
As to why I re-uploaded it now... well, why not? The
dance could become popular, I suppose. And the bass-line
is worth listening to.
